Balance Devices

Balance Tools

Balance is a fundamental skill to every day life. Sadly it can often become a problem for many different health related conditions. Whether is from a concussions, neurological deficits, or a simple strain/sprain injury balance training is fundamental to appropriate rehabilitation.

Balance pods are extremely useful for rehabbing vestibular and balance disorders. These discs can also be helpful with rehabilitation of ankle injuries. The size and number of the disc allow for some unique exercises were you can perform gait based exercises.

Bosu ball is typically much larger bases than the balance pods. Their stable base permits more robust exercises while performing balance with less fear of falling off the ball.

Wood tilt balance devices are unique for segmenting the direction of balance therapy. These devices could be seen as easier for patients as there is only one direction of balance that is challenged.

When you have ankle stability issue it's always a good idea to help support your ankle while you're trying to rehabilitate. Ankle braces can be a great wait to reduce the amount of instability in your ankle. 

Balance foams are generally the easiest form of a perturbed surface. It's typically a really good first surface to start balance exercises when your balance is significantly impaired. 

Vision Devices

Vision

When you have visual deficits it can be very hard to maintain function in day to day life. It's always important to understand that visual aids are made to help in the short term not long term. If you become dependent on visual aid long term it may become more difficult to rehabilitate you from your injuries as time goes on.

Pinhole glasses can be great for increasing visual acuity. After head injuries you may want to practice using pinhole glasees to help your eye increase their focus. Often patient fine these glasses can help make their vision more crisp after trauma. 

Kindle tablet for patient who can't look at screens

Light from computer screen can be a large deterrent for individuals suffering from head injuries. Using devices like kindles are often less strenuous than computer screen permitting you to read for longer durations.

Red light lenses for concussion patients

Red lenses can be extremely useful for reducing the amount of light stimulation you are receiving. Red lights can have a calming effect on your head which may be helpful for some individual suffering from head injuries. 

Brock strings for convergence failure

Brock strings can be extremely helpful if you're suffering from convergence failure following your head injury. Although convergence exercise can be done without a Brock string the simplicity of the device allows you to track your progress. 

Blue light lenses for concussion patients

One of the most common filters talked about for individuals who are suffering from TBIs' is blue light filters. Surprisingly blue light can have a positive effect on some individuals depending on what part of their brain is injured.

Hearing Aids

Hearing sensitivity is a common problem faced by individuals who have suffered from head injuries. It can be very helpful to have a pair of sound suppression devices to help you get through the day. Check out the following devices for their unique features. 

Loop ear plugs for noise sensitivity.

Loop ear bud are a great way to reduce noise but still maintain your hearing. They are designed well enough to be worn anywhere and for long hours. These sensory dampening ear buds are a choice for those with a slight hearing sensitivity.

Wax ear plugs are a simple approach to cancelling noise. With a wax ear plug you can insure a form fitting block of the ear canal allow you to block out unwanted noise.

Minuendo ear plugs are definitely a higher grade of noise cancellation. One of their great features is that they permit the users to change the level of noise with a lever mounted on the ear plug. This device is great for modulating the sound intensity as needed throughout your day.

Here are a few of the devices I commonly recommend to my patients to help with a few their neurological problems. 

TENS device for pain management and brain rehabilitation

TENS devices primary function is pain inhibition. However, these units can also be used for vestibular rehabilitation. This unit specifically provides easy use for the patient with lost of customization. Sadly like all electric modalities there are some contraindications for its use. 

Cervical decompression device

Cervical injuries and chronic neck pain are often best helped if you can perform at home therapies. This device isn't perfect but it's simplicity allows you to provided some at home treatments on a regular basis. 

Vibration gloves

Vibration can have significant impact on different neurological disorders. I use vibration therapy to help my patients and these gloves can serve as an easy at home device to use on a continual basis.  

Lumbar decompression device

Low back pain can be a crippling issue. This device allows for you to take some of the tension off your back at home. Like most problems if you can work on yourself at home you increase your odds of a fast and long term recovery. 

Biofreeze

Biofreeze is an over the counter analgesic lotion that can be used to help reduce your pain. This lotion has a very strong menthol smell but I still find it to be one of the best lotions to use on my patients. 

Muse headphones for meditation and mindfulness

MUSE devices are a great way to for you to calm your thinking at home. There devices offer feedback for you to help train your brain to calm down and reduce anxiety.
